hanging in the school when they come back to visit. They took a lot of pride and ownership in doing the project and feel lucky they were the grades chosen. They want to do a project in the future with Mr. Mendelson, and hopefully we can get another grant for one.”

To apply for the grant, Preston Elementary answered a series of questions pertaining to the artistic goals of and the expected student outcomes of the proposed project.

In addition, the school provided information on the project’s focus, both art and non-art related, and how the project will be integrated into the curriculum.

The school also was required to describe how the project would be recognized once completed. Preston Elementary has yet to officially schedule, but has planned, a gallery show unveiling of the tile installation to celebrate the accomplishment of its students. Students will give a short presentation on what they learned and accomplished in their tile-making venture at the unveiling.

Following the project, students will write about their tile creations in their classes, and discuss the connections they found when learning about ceramics and tile making. They will also take part in a reflection meeting in art class to discuss what they learned and how they are going to use their new skills and knowledge in future art projects.
